Sissieretta Jones: Black Soprano Superstar

Black History Month is observed from February 1 through March 1. We honor Black history, achievement, and legacy.

Today we remember soprano Sissieretta Jones and her groundbreaking Madison Square Garden performance at the 26th Street and Madison Avenue venue in 1892, which led to her launch as a global opera superstar.

Meet Markus Glocker, Executive Chef/Owner, and Katja Scharnagl, Beverage Director at Koloman, a French-Viennese restaurant located at 16 West 29th Street inside NoMad’s Ace Hotel.

“There is nothing more exciting for me to offer great food and great service in a New York space that is energetic, fun, and elegant,” says Chef Glocker.

Save the Date: Rangoli Art Celebration

Mark your calendars for Saturday, March 11 from 12 – 4 pm at the Capitol Plaza (48 West 27th Street) to join us at our first ever Rangoli Art Celebration!

This community festival will feature Rangoli, an art form originating from India where beautiful patterns are created using organic materials.

The Rangoli represents the happiness, positivity, and liveliness of a household, and is intended to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good luck.

This family-friendly public event will include:

  • A collaborative Rangoli guided by Aeilushi Mistry
  • Live traditional music
  • South Asian treats
  • Educational and cultural activities

NYC & Company Tourism Support: NYC & Company is offering a free educational program, Tourism Ready 101 for local businesses to learn how to work with the tourism industry. The first session will take place virtually on Thursday, February 23 from 10 – 11 am. Register here.

Overnight Truck Parking: City Hall has convened a Task Force to address overnight truck parking in NYC and to assess potential solutions. A Community Survey has been created to gather input on this issue and inform next steps. The survey will be open until Friday, February 24.

NYC Employers: Salary Transparency Law is in effect. As of November 1, 2022, all NYC employers with four or more employees and employment agencies of all sizes must state the salary range or rate of pay when advertising a job, promotion, or transfer opportunity. For more information, visit here.
