Oct 22, 2025

Meet Andres Balbunea, Founder and Owner of Mamazul Mexican Grill located at 1155 Broadway in NoMad.

1. Mamazul Mexican Grill opened in 2023 in the neighborhood. Tell us more about the restaurant’s concept and offerings.

Mamazul Mexican Grill was born out of a desire to bring the vibrant flavors of Mexico to the heart of New York City. Our concept is rooted in tradition, but we also love to put a fresh, modern twist on classic dishes. We focus on high-quality, authentic ingredients — from house-made salsas to slow-braised meats — and serve everything in a warm, inviting setting. Our menu features everything from street-style tacos and ceviches to creative cocktails inspired by regional Mexican flavors. Mamazul is a celebration of culture, food, and the joy of gathering.

2. What inspired you to open a restaurant in Flatiron & NoMad? What aspect of your job as a local business owner excites you the most?

Flatiron & NoMad has such a unique energy — it’s a true intersection of creativity, history, and innovation. We were drawn to the neighborhood because it reflects the diversity and dynamism that defines NYC and we had always been drawn to this area. Being a local business owner here means being part of a community that values connection and experience. What excites me most is the daily opportunity to meet people from all walks of life, introduce them to Mexican cuisine and Mexican spirits in a meaningful way, and be part of a neighborhood that’s constantly evolving.

3. What led you to pursue a career in the food and hospitality industry? For those aspiring to work in the field, what professional advice can you share?

My passion for hospitality started about 30 years ago when I started working in my first restaurant job in Philly, when I first saw how it brings people together. There’s something incredibly rewarding about creating spaces where people feel welcome and leave with great memories. The restaurant industry is demanding, but it teaches resilience, creativity, and empathy. For anyone aspiring to enter the field: stay curious, be patient, and remember that the details matter. Success comes from consistency and a genuine passion for service.

4. Last year, Mamazul partnered with Flatiron NoMad Partnership for their Día de Muertos Food Tasting. Do you have a favorite memory from that event and/or collaboration?

Last year’s Día de Muertos event was truly special. It was moving to see how many people came out not only to enjoy the food but to engage with the cultural significance of the celebration. My self included. One of my favorite memories was seeing guests light candles and add notes and pictures (including me adding the pictures of my father and grandparents) to our community altar — it became a beautiful shared space of remembrance and reflection. The partnership with Flatiron NoMad made it all possible, and we’re grateful to be part of such meaningful programming.

5. How is Mamazul celebrating Día de Muertos this year? Is the restaurant hosting any special events or serving any unique menu items?

This year, we’re honoring Día de Muertos with a multi-day celebration. We’ll have a traditional altar set up in the restaurant where guests can contribute photos or messages to honor loved ones. We will also host a Día de Muertos Party with costumes competition. The winner will get one gift certificate for $100.

6. Flatiron & NoMad is a dining and culture destination. How has the neighborhood’s vibrant energy and the transformation of Broadway influenced the way you operate and innovate here?

The transformation of Broadway into a more pedestrian-friendly, open public space has been a huge win for local businesses like ours. It’s allowed us to extend our hospitality outdoors and interact with the community in new ways. The neighborhood’s energy constantly inspires us — whether it’s trying out new menu items based on seasonal trends or hosting cultural events that reflect our roots. Flatiron & NoMad push us to stay creative and connected.

7. Finally, choose three words to describe Flatiron & NoMad.
