Meet Migdalia Torres, Director of Sales & Marketing at Martinique New York on Broadway, the landmark hotel in the neighborhood.
1. Describe your role as Director of Sales and Marketing at Martinique New York on Broadway. What aspect of the job excites you the most?
As Director of Sales and Marketing at Martinique New York on Broadway, I get the opportunity to wear a lot of hats, focusing on growing the business, building relationships, creating new opportunities, and making sure we continue to tell the story of the hotel in an authentic and meaningful way. What I love most about my role is that every day is different. I am constantly learning, growing, and challenging myself as an individual and as a leader. We are currently in the middle of restructuring our teams and enhancing our catering and events experience, while also creating memorable experiences through collaboration with our dining outlets, with several new outlets opening in the coming months.
It’s an exciting time for Martinique New York, and I’m really enjoying being part of the evolution and helping shape what’s next, while continuing to enhance the overall guest experience.
2. Martinique New York on Broadway has welcomed guests for more than 125 years as a historic landmark hotel. What makes the property unique, and what accommodations can guests enjoy during their stay?
What makes Martinique New York on Broadway unique is the combination of its history, location, and the experience we offer our guests. As you mentioned, having welcomed guests for more than 125 years, there is a real sense of history throughout the property. As an award-winning historic landmark, Martinique New York features nostalgic NYC design, including hand-laid marble tiles and a grand spiral staircase from the hotel’s original build in 1898. At the same time, we continue to evolve and create new experiences for today’s travelers.
Our location, right between Herald Square and NoMad, also makes us especially unique. We have so much of New York City right outside our doors, with easy access to transportation and major attractions including the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, Macy’s 34th Street, and Bryant Park. Guests can enjoy a variety of accommodations designed for different types of travelers, whether they’re visiting for business, a weekend getaway, or a longer stay. We also have an exciting collection of dining, entertainment, and event experiences, including Carnegie Diner & Cafe, The Bronze Owl, our vibrant cocktail bar, Nōksu, a hidden NYC gem with a MICHELIN star, and “Sweet Graffiti”, which offers a creative twist on chocolates and confections. And we’re not stopping there. We have several exciting new concepts coming to the property, including Baekjeong Black, an elevated extension of NYC’s recognized Korean barbecue brand, Clutch, the first-of-its-kind immersive K-Pop “clawcade” lounge, and NYX Karaoke & Lounge.
For me, it’s that combination of historic charm, an incredible location, and an ever-evolving guest experience that makes Martinique New York on Broadway such a special place. There’s always something new happening, while we continue to honor the history and character that has made Martinique New York part of New York City for more than 125 years.
3. In addition to its accommodations, the hotel also offers a variety of on-site amenities and dining options, including Michelin-starred Nōksu. Which amenities or experiences have become guest favorites?
This is so hard to choose just one! Each of our on-site dining experiences offers something completely unique. Whether you’re looking for farm-fresh comfort food and an all-day breakfast at Carnegie Diner & Cafe, enjoying a handcrafted cocktail at The Bronze Owl, or venturing just 20 feet underground into the Herald Square subway station to indulge in Nōksu’s 10-course Michelin-starred dining experience, there’s something for everyone. And let’s not forget “Sweet Graffiti”, where guests can experience a more refined take on desserts and confections. I think that’s what makes Martinique New York on Broadway so special; we’re creating experiences for our guests at every level, from casual and approachable to elevated and unexpected. You can truly have several completely different New York experiences without ever leaving the property.
4. You’ve worked in sales and marketing for more than a decade. What led you to pursue a career in the hospitality industry? For those aspiring to work in the field, what professional advice can you share?
I have always enjoyed event planning and hosting. When I was in college, I worked for a nonprofit in the development department, where I was involved in raising funds for the organization. That was really where I got my first taste of what event planning entailed, and I loved it! What I truly enjoy about hospitality is the process of sharing with a customer why they should entrust me and my team with such an important experience. I love collaborating with all of our departments to make sure the guest experience is seamless, from the initial conversation and planning all the way through the end of the event or their departure. Being part of that process from beginning to end, and ending the night with a simple “thank you,” a hug, or a toast from a customer, is what makes it so meaningful for me.
My professional advice to anyone looking to get into hospitality would be to learn the operational side of the business. Take the time to understand what each team does and how they do their job. It will make you more appreciative of your peers, help you build trust and stronger teamwork, and give you the knowledge and experience to better sell the overall experience to your customers. It will also continue to develop you as a salesperson and as a leader. And be prepared for some long days but also some incredibly rewarding wins. At the end of the day, hospitality is about people, relationships, and creating experiences that people remember.
5. Flatiron & NoMad is a destination for tourists and locals alike. How has being a part of the vibrant neighborhood shaped the guest experience and influenced the way Martinique New York on Broadway continues to evolve?
Being part of Flatiron & NoMad has really shaped the way we look at the guest experience. Our location gives us the best of both worlds, as we are surrounded by the energy and excitement of New York City, while also being part of a neighborhood that has its own personality, culture, restaurants, businesses, and experiences. For our guests, the neighborhood becomes an extension of the hotel. Whether they’re here for the first time or returning to New York, we want them to experience more than just a hotel stay. We want to help them discover the neighborhood, from dining and entertainment to the architecture, history, and everything happening just outside our doors. As the neighborhood continues to evolve, so do we. We’re constantly looking at how we can bring new experiences to the property and create reasons for both visitors and locals to come through our doors. With our evolving dining, entertainment, and events offerings, we’re not just responding to the growth of Flatiron & NoMad; we want to be part of it. I think that’s one of the most exciting things about being at Martinique New York on Broadway right now. We have more than 125 years of history in New York, but we’re continuing to evolve alongside a neighborhood that is changing, growing, and creating something new.
6. When you’re taking a break from Martinique New York on Broadway, how do you like to spend your time in the neighborhood?
I love to simply walk around the neighborhood and see where I end up. One of the things I enjoy most about New York is stumbling upon a new store, restaurant, bar, or activity that I didn’t know was there. I’ll often make a mental note of places I discover and then come back with friends and family to experience them together. There’s always something new to discover and I love that I can step outside the hotel and find something different every time.
7. Finally, choose three words to describe Flatiron & NoMad.
